Receding Gums - The Silent Tooth Killer

At first, receding gums may not sound like such a disastrous affliction, but when one considers the possible causes and consequences of the condition, it suddenly becomes much more than a vanity issue.

In many cases, a receding gum line is caused by periodontal disease (also known as gum disease). Three out of four adults have some form of it. And, in most cases, it doesn't cause any pain and therefore goes unnoticed.

Most common in adults, it starts when plaque, containing bacteria, builds up on the teeth and gums. When the plaque is not removed daily, it produces toxins that irritate the gums. Eventually these toxins destroy the gum tissues, causing them to separate from the tooth (recede) and form spaces called pockets. The pockets hold more bacteria, which only compounds the problem.

The early stages of the problem are marked by red or swollen gums that bleed easily. At this point, however, it is reversible and can be detected by your dentist during regular check-ups. As the disease progresses, it can destroy the bone and soft tissues that support the teeth. Teeth can become loose, fall out or have to be removed by a dentist. In fact, periodontitis is the culprit in 70 percent of tooth loss in adults over 40.

The good news is that receding gums are easily prevented through brushing and flossing daily, eating a balanced diet and visiting the dentist regularly for professional cleanings.

In addition, I also highly recommend this treatment from a company called Therabreath, that I recently discovered.

the PerioTherapy System from Therabreath

The PerioTherapy System was designed for those who are looking for a way to prevent gum problems, whether they have bad breath or not. There is a strong relationship between gum disease and bad breath, because volatile sulfur compounds (found in bad breath) are needed to initiate the penetration of dangerous toxins below the receding gum line to start periodontal disease. This new research corroborates our work in finding non-surgical treatments for gum issues.

The PerioTherapy System Starter Kit consists of our PerioTherapy Oral Rinse (16 oz. bottle) and PerioGel, (its 4 oz. toothpaste), a handy syringe to help with application, and a tongue cleaner. It's priced at only $29.95.

By following this simple regimen, adults can look forward to keeping their natural teeth throughout their life. If only maintaining a full head of hair were this easy.

If you want to learn more about the receding gum line treatment mentioned above, here's an article that will provide additional information on how you can also put a stop to your bad breath, while working on your receding gums.

Meanwhile, this free eBook is a fantastic resource that covers all aspects of bad breath, including it's relationship to periodontal disease.
